Maggie's Positive Hypnobirthing Birth Story

Maggie's Positive
Hypnobirthing Birth Story

I had a show in the early hours of the morning then felt a ‘pop’. We were planning a home birth – we had the pool, lights, aromatherapy oils, play list, affirmations and a fridge full of snacks. I was concerned the fluid was a browny/green colour though. At that point my surges were really strong and I had been vomiting quite badly. I was starting to worry when Chris started playing my affirmation mp3. Immediately I felt calmer. As soon as I heard “I follow my instincts and make informed decisions that are right for me and my baby” I knew what I had to do. We made our way to hospital.

The midwives identified the fluid as meconium. Maggie was showing signs of distress; I took a deep breath and asked for an epidural. I could see where I was heading and needed to be as calm and pain-free as possible to mentally and physically deal with the cascade of interventions that were about to ensue. I was given a mobile epidural and concentrated on staying calm and switching off from the fact that I was now at entirely the other end of the spectrum from what I had planned for our birth. Chris set up the room and put some lavender oil in our diffuser and I continued to listen to my mp3, breathing through the surges and down to my baby to keep her calm.

"The effect that hypnobirthing had on my

about what lay ahead."

Maggie’s heart rate was causing concern. Outside the room there was talk of instrumental delivery and more likely a C-section. Chris was amazing and shielded me from all of this, only telling me what I needed to know in a calm and positive way.

I wasn’t progressing so I was given a hormone drip. By this time I was in my own world, doing my best to breathe calmness and love down to my baby. The consultant looking after me was gunning to deliver without a c-section. I visualised my baby being birthed. In the short time it took to transfer me to theatre, I had fully dilated and mustered all my strength to push. Before I knew it, Maggie was out (with a little help from a ventouse) and on my chest. I had done it!

The effect that hypnobirthing had on my experience was profound. The course really helped me connect with Maggie and be as informed as possible about what lay ahead. It also taught us that although plans can change, your mindset doesn’t have to. The techniques we learned, teamed with the amazing support of my husband, meant that although my birth path changed I have nothing but positive thoughts of my whole experience and would do it all again 100 times over. I owned my birthing experience and I am immensely proud of it.

Jake's Positive Caesarean Birth Story

Jake's Positive
Caesarean Birth Story

We were lucky enough to undertake a private hypnobirthing course with Jess. It was fantastic as it meant that the content was directed to our particular circumstances. It helped us prepare for the range of different possibilities that we had been told we may face due to complications in our pregnancy. The course included induction and caesarean delivery, as well as understanding better the process of labour and the ways we would prepare ourselves for birth.

My labour began quite dramatically. I had to go into hospital by ambulance and ultimately, I ended up having an emergency Caesarean section. Whilst this was far from following our birth plan, the understanding and practices that Jess had taught us during our hypnobirthing course were invaluable. Helping us stay calm throughout even the most stressful points in the process.

We were very happy that the staff at the hospital were all on board with hypnobirthing. Ready to help us implement the practices we’d learned, both on the ward and in theatre. Despite the unexpected nature of his entry to the world, after a short exercise of his lungs, Jake, became calm, quiet and settled as we met each other properly for the first time. I put this down to the hypnobirthing techniques we learnt, allowing me to keep calm through everything we faced.

Now, when facing the challenges of being a new parent, I still use the understanding and calming techniques we learned and find it so useful. We are lucky to have been blessed with a very chilled-out baby, and I feel that this part of his nature has been greatly influenced by the calm and happy way he came into the world.

Ellie Rose's Positive Birth Story

When my labour started I felt calm and relaxed, remembering all the techniques Jess had taught me. I got in the bath and focused on my breathing, which really helped me get through the surges. It gave me real focus so that I didn’t start to feel overwhelmed. When things started to get tough, I kept remembering that every surge was one closer to meeting my little baby, my favourite affirmation. Keeping a positive mental attitude really helped me get through.

After 36 hours I decided that an epidural was the right thing for me. Knowing all the pros and cons really made me feel secure in the knowledge that it was what I wanted.

When it was time to push I changed my breathing techniques. It really helped to visualise my baby moving down which I had discussed during the course with Jess. All the techniques kept me calm and focused. Even though it was a long process, keeping the hypnobirthing techniques and visualisations in mind, I managed to watch my little girl enter the world. I’ll always remember that precious moment.

Thank you Jess, for the tools to make my birth the best experience it possibly could be.
