So you want a Home Birth but COVID-19 has other plans.

Your midwife has told you you have to give birth in a hospital.

But you’ve dreamed of giving birth at home since you saw those two little blue lines.

What do you do?

Here are my top 5 tips for making your hospital birth feel like your home birth…

  1. Stay at home as long as possible. You don’t have to rush off as soon as your first surge (contraction) comes. By staying at home longer you protect your oxytocin bubble meaning your labour progresses so that hopefully by the time you get to hospital you’re ready for baby to be born.
  2. Turn off the lights. Hospitals are known for being bright places so turn the lights off in your room and turn on your fairy lights and LED candles.
  3. Put up pictures you have of your loved ones, any scan photos or of your favourite holiday destinations. When you look at these you’ll get an instant hit of oxytocin. You could also put up some affirmations just in case you need a visual reminder of the rockstar you are.
  4. If you’ve used a room scent or any essential oils for relaxation during pregnancy, take these to hospital with you and give the room spritz.
  5. Ask for the bed to be moved to the side of the room if you don’t intend to use it. This will give you lots more room to move about freely. Try using a birthing ball or put some blankets and pillows on the floor to make a cosy safe space. By using your own blankets and pillows you make it feel a lot more like your home.

There are loads of other bits you can do to create your home birth in hospital, these are just a few lovely examples.
